Is Fish Jerky a Good Survival Food?

When buying food products for your survival kit, it’s important to consider a few factors. These include how heavy the items are, how much space they take up, how to prepare the items before eating, how long they can be stored, and of course taste.

Is fish jerky a good survival food? Yes! Any type of jerky would make an excellent addition to your survival kit. Jerky is typically light weight, portable, easily consumed, and it can be stored for a long time.

Our Kaimana Ahi Tuna Jerky has a two-year shelf life and is an excellent source of protein and Omega-3s. It can be eaten straight out of the bag, or you can chop it up and use it as a meat substitute in stir fry dishes or even in an omelet! And best of all, it tastes great.

Ancient Hawaiians preserved their fish by salting and drying them. Large fish would be cleaned, cut, and soaked in a salty brine for three days before being laid out to dry in the sun. A thoroughly dried piece of fish, white and hardened with salt could be stored for up to two or three years!  So, you could say jerky has been the ultimate survival food for generations.

We suggest that jerky be stored in a cool, dry place. Also, once you open a bag it should be consumed immediately. If you are unable to do so, please refrigerate any leftovers.
